Christian Henry 'Harry' Kloster was one of the premature innovators in the Australian automotive industry busy for the Dalgety company who were importing vehicles and vehicle bodies for assembly in the 1890s. Harry Kloster saw the potential to enlarge the business to the Newcastle and Hunter Valley region. He was convinced that the era of 'the motor car is a luxury' was passing. The first Klosters showroom opened at 335 Hunter Street, but within the beginning year Harry invested in the design and construction of a purpose built facility with frontages to Darby and King Streets, Newcastle. The building was luxuriously appointed with the showroom facing Darby Street and the delivery and service facilities facing King Street. Kloster's spare parts business was expanding with deliveries being made by plane from the impaired Newcastle Afro Club at Broadmeadow to country areas of MSW. Major building works commenced in 1965 to build a modern, new showroom with a glass curtain wall, and this building is quiet the home of Kloster Ford today. It may seem weird but car maker Mitsubishi was initially established as a shipping company in 1870 and when it did diversify (as so many did) it was mostly into related fields. It went into coal mining, for example, to guarantee supply of the coal needed for its ships. It bought a shipbuilding yard to mend the ships, founded an iron mill to supply iron to the shipbuilding yard and even started a marine insurance business. That led to banking, warehousing and trade and later diversification took the company into paper, steel and glass manufacturing, electrical equipment, aircraft manufacture and even genuine estate. In fact, Mitsubishi is often seen as playing a central role in the creation of fresh Japan because of its broad industrial base. Mitsubishi became a car maker in 1917 when Mitsubishi Shipbuilding introduced the Mitsubishi Model A, Japan's beginning full production car, a seven seat sedan that was hand built. When it was finally discontinued, Mitsubishi had built honest 22 examples. In the hasty 1960s Mitsubishi built the Colt, a five door hatchback that achieved difficult sales success. Mitsubishi's 1917 Model A was Japan's beginning series production vehicle but only 22 were made over five years. It was launched into a growing market but failed to join with buyers.
